Ideal Policy: Edenred’s 3 pillars of social responsibility

25 de September, 2023

The Edenred Group was founded in 1962 and since then has made it its mission to make the world of work a better place for everyone.

This commitment is evident in Edenred’s activity in all 45 countries in which we are present and is broken down into three fundamental pillars:

  • Ideal People: to improve people’s lives;
  • Ideal Planet: preserving the planet;
  • Ideal Progress: creating value with responsibility.

Learn more about each of these pillars that shape our social responsibility policy.

Ideal People

As far as the “People” pillar is concerned, Edenred wants to establish itself as a benchmark organization in terms of professional development, respect for human rights, diversity and inclusion. It also aims to promote people’s well-being through healthy and sustainable eating habits and to contribute to local development.

Some of the initiatives that support these objectives are, for example:

  • Edenstep Program: a program aimed at recent graduates that allows them to have professional experience in an international environment for two years.
  • Talent Weekan initiative that brings together around 20 employees with between 5 and 10 years’ professional experience, with the aim of developing the Group’s young talents.
  • Edenred Executive Academy: a program designed for more experienced employees and covering topics related to leadership, personal development, business growth, etc.
  • Idealday: a movement carried out annually by all of Edenred’s business units with the aim of promoting voluntary actions and supporting local communities in different areas (environmental, social, etc.).
  • Edenraid: an initiative that encourages all Edenred employees to walk, run or cycle to raise funds for Médecins Sans Frontières.
  • More Than Ever Fund: Edenred announced the creation of this fund in April 2020, with the aim of supporting its ecosystem in the face of the possible negative impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic. In Portugal, 50,000 euros were distributed through 500 Edenred meal cards loaded with 100 euros each, to refugees coming from Ukraine.

Ideal Planet

The main objective of the “Planet” pillar is to preserve the environment by reducing the carbon footprint, reducing the consumption of natural resources and waste, and developing greener solutions and services. The goal is ambitious: to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

  • Between 2013 and 2021, the Edenred Group reduced its direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 46%.
  • Edenred is also committed to digitizing its solutions and services, minimizing the impact of its activities on natural resources. At the same time, it has favored more sustainable options in the manufacture of benefits in card or paper voucher format. In Portugal, all cards will be made from recycled PVC from 2022. In addition, Edenred Portugal has joined the Merece Project, which not only allows cards to be recycled and given a second life, but also aims to offset the carbon emissions generated by card production by planting trees (one tree is planted for every kilo of waste collected).
  • In its own offices, Edenred has been adopting greener practices, such as more efficient energy consumption or giving priority to renewable energy suppliers.
  • Food waste and the adoption of more sustainable eating habits are also topics addressed in the context of Ideal Planet. Edenred Portugal, for example, has established a partnership with Too Good To Go, through which it encourages establishments and users to combat food waste.

Ideal Progress

Finally, through the “Progress” pillar, Edenred is committed to creating value responsibly throughout its ecosystem. To this end, it carries out its activities and establishes partnerships in an ethical manner and focuses on the digital transition, always with a strong concern for aspects such as cybersecurity, compliance and data protection.

  • The code of ethics defines the standards of behavior expected of Edenred’s employees and also of its suppliers. In the case of employees, training is provided in this area.
  • Edenred favors transparency and compliance with each country’s tax obligations and regulations, as well as international standards and treaties.
  • Cybersecurity and data protection are structural issues for the entire Group, and recurrent training sessions are held to make employees aware of the importance of these topics.
  • To promote continuous improvement in its service and guarantee a good experience for all stakeholders, Edenred regularly carries out satisfaction questionnaires as part of the Passion for the Customer Program. With the feedback obtained, it is possible to develop practical actions that seek to respond to the problems and opportunities raised.
  • Edenred also helps companies, their employees and establishments to adopt good practices when it comes to diet, exercise and well-being. An example of this is the FOOD Program, developed with the support of the European Union and which, in Portugal, also has the backing of Direção-Geral da Saúde.
