What is vocational retraining?
In practice, vocational retraining refers to a change of profession. It consists of developing new skills in an area other than that in which people work or have trained.
This change can happen for various reasons: when the person doesn’t like what they do or doesn’t feel professionally fulfilled; when they can’t find job opportunities in their area; when they have no prospects for progression or salary development, for example.
At a time when we are witnessing a technological and digital transition that is shaping the job market, new skills and new worker profiles are emerging that companies need to hire. And if these profiles don’t match the training that most people have, then retraining can be a good strategy.
80% of Portuguese professionals say they are available for professional retraining
According to the study “Decoding Global Reskilling and Career Paths” (2021) by the Boston Consulting Group, Portugal is the seventh country in which more professionals say they are willing to retrain.
Globally, digital and information technology professions are the ones that professionals would most favor if they chose to change the direction of their careers. This may be due to the fact that they are typically well paid and offer better opportunities for progression. Next are jobs in marketing, human resources and consultancy.
