The usual rush, but now on wheels

The hustle and bustle of everyday life is a constant in Portuguese life, and traffic, overwork and lack of rest are reason enough for the day not to go as smoothly as we’d like. Have you heard that physical exercise is sometimes the solution? How about combining the useful with the pleasant? Cycling to the office or taking a scooter along the way are trendy solutions and seem to be here to stay. After all, there’s nothing better than getting to work on wheels to have an energetic day.
In Lisbon, known for its seven hills, it was expected that the phenomenon would not succeed, but on the contrary, and thanks to the engines that reach up to 25 kilometers per hour and give the necessary push on the steepest climbs, the project proved to be a success.
In 2018, the Portuguese capital was honored with the European Mobility Week and European Green Capital 2020 awards, which highlighted the work and commitment that the municipality has shown in promoting the environment and sustainable mobility with the aim of creating a better world.
In the last two years, cycle paths have begun to take shape and both bicycles and scooters have taken the city streets by storm, becoming one of the most common means of transportation. The phenomenon is growing by leaps and bounds and, of course, in order to get around the city, it’s important to follow certain rules, such as stopping at red lights, wearing a helmet or going around traffic circles from the outside, as long as you give way to cars at the various exits.
There are currently more than 1,000 vehicles available in the capital and, between the speedy, the acrobats and even those who try their hand at a more clumsy route, it’s rare not to come across some of the many wheels and pedals that travel from the north to the south of the country.
Bicycles continue to be the most popular option in Portugal, as they are cheaper than public transport, although scooters promise to catch up in the short term. But cost is not the only reason for choosing them.
As well as being 100% sustainable and ecological alternatives, these transport solutions are healthy!
